Mie Ayam, I am me (2015)
New York City, New York USA
This Box set is a collection of nine zines conceptualized and hand-bound by artist Keg De Souza, published under the name All Thumbs Press. The primary focus of the collection is de Souza’s interest in cultural relations. Each book is a documentation of her thoughts and experiences as she travels from her own country, Australia, to countries in North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. While de Souza remarks on the strangeness of these foreign lands she also recognizes herself as the foreigner, noting her misadventures and how over time she gains familiarity with certain customs. Her stories are humorous, honest and direct. Filled with hand drawn illustrations (which de Souza made into risograph stencils), her zines feel more like personalized sketchbooks.
Three of de Souza’s zines were made as a part of exhibitions or artist residencies. In these works we get a sense of de Souza’s interest in cultural relations beyond her own experiences as she draws upon history and community members for content.
