Screening at the Darling Foundry

11 October 2012

Hi,

I am currently undertaking a residency at the Darling Foundry as part of a swap with Artspace, Sydney and whilst here I am hosting a screening of two of my video projects so if you like mapping, Michael Jackson or Indonesian ghost stories there might just be something that appeals to you.
And a bit about the films…

Emeraldtown: Gary, Indiana (2010) 22mins
Emeraldtown: Gary, Indiana (You Are Here) is a video portrait of one of America’s most famous cities. Gary is known as the “Miracle City” – it was a major steel producer, home to Michael Jackson and the first city to elect a Black major. It has also been called scary Gary, the murder capital and one of America’s poorest cities. Emeraldtown: Gary, Indiana was made in conjunction with ReMake Estate, an edible garden and mural project in an abandoned house in Gary. It uses footage from The Wiz, an African American remake of The Wizard of Oz (starring Michael Jackson) and interviews with locals to explore aspects of life in present day Gary.

Cities Without Maps – Kota Tanpa Peta (2008) 19 mins
Cities Without Maps – Kota Tanpa Peta(You Are Here) is a mapping project of Ratmakan and Jagalan two kampungs in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. These neighbourhoods do not currently appear on maps of the city, the densely packed architecture of the area is marked simply by a major road or landmark, the rest left an inviting blank. We explored this cartographic blank – not by creating a Cartesian map – but by looking at what forms of mapping already exisit in the area; such as maps inked onto skin through tattoos; the web of ghost stories explaining the histories of the area (which was built on a former graveyard); and the various other ways people negotiate their ways through this urban space.
